    •Needle and syringe exchange programs are one key tool in protecting against the spread of Hepatis C, Hepatis B, HIV and the life-long and costly health care to combat these infections.
    •Compare the medical costs of one case of HIV, estimated to be $385,000 with the ten cents -- a dime! -- it costs for one sterile syringe and needle.
    •Every case of infectious disease that is prevented, in turn, protects others from acquiring the disease. Just as the spread of disease is exponential, so can be the prevention and control of its spread.
    •Proper collection of used needles and syringes protects the public from exposure to contaminated needles discarded in our communities.
    •American Public Health Association recognizes needle exchange programs as being effective preventing disease spread and advocates for legal access to clean syringes and needles for this reason.

    Missoula County supports SB 228 - Exempting needle and syringe exchange providers from drug paraphernalia laws, being heard in House Judiciary Monday morning. Needle and syringe exchange programs are critical in protecting against the spread of Hepatitis C, Hepatitis B, HIV, and the costly lifelong healthcare to combat these infections. A sterile syringe and needle costs a dime, compared to the care of one HIV cost, which is estimated to be $385,000. Proper collection of used needles and syringes protects the public from exposure to contaminated needles discarded in our communities.
