Per Heidi Kendall: Yes, we want to support HB 23, a two-year pilot program providing grants administered by the state suicide prevention coordinator. The grants will focus on the continuum of prevention, intervention, and post-event assistance to American Indian and rural individuals and families and Indian tribes.
Missoula County has not had a large number of American Indian suicides relative to other Montana counties (two during the period 1/1/14 - 3/1/16, compared to six each in Roosevelt and Lake, four in Hill, and three each in Blaine and Glacier*), but Missoula County does include significant populations of American Indians and rural individuals and our residents would benefit from a pilot grant program of this kind. Whether Missoula County would apply for or receive a grant or not, this program would lead to a better understanding of suicide prevention efforts in these underserved populations.
