From Erin Kautz: Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training helps law enforcement respond appropriately to a person in the midst of a crisis mental health situation by teaching officers to identify mental health crises, de-escalate the situation and refer the person to needed services. This helps as an alternative to incarceration and getting people with mental health needs into services that can provide more long term benefits.
